Find a More Permanent Solution with Implant Supported Dentures in Irvine
Dentures face a lot of stigmas. While they’ve come a long way to improve fit, some patients are still weary about how it will affect their favorite activities, social encounters, or foods they enjoy. Patients can opt for an alternative to the traditional ways. Dr. Ursula Levine offers implant supported dentures in Irvine so patients can smile with confidence.
What are implant supported dentures?
Unlike traditional dentures that rest on the gums, an implant supported denture is mounted on titanium rods that are mounted within the jaw. A minimum of two implants is required to support each denture, but up to five, depending on the type and needs of the patient.
Like traditional dentures, the base is made of acrylic to match the look of gums and fitted with porcelain or acrylic teeth to mimic natural teeth.
Implant supported dentures come in three varieties:
These dentures include a thin metal bar curved to match the jaw. Clips or similar attachment devices are used to mount the bar to the dentures.
Also known as stud-attachment dentures, these dentures use a ball-shaped attachment to join to the implants. The implants typically fit into a socket on the denture, forming a male-to-female connection, but sometimes this is reversed.
Unlike the alternatives, these dentures are permanent fixtures in the mouth. They’re not intended to be removed. These fixed dentures are typically mounted on four implants, often called an All-On-4.
What makes implant supported dentures special?
These dentures provide a more secure fit compared to the traditional counterpart. There’s no need for bonding material either. With a proper fit, the gums and mouth won’t be irritated or inflamed.
The secure fit means you’re able to enjoy more of your favorite foods. Fibrous foods that are difficult to chew with missing teeth or traditional dentures, can once again be enjoyed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
You can enjoy social interactions with confidence, knowing your dentures won’t budge. Ill-fitting traditional dentures can create awkward clicking noises from suction, or fall out of place, creating an embarrassing situation. Implant supported dentures remove all of these concerns.
Am I a good candidate for implant supported dentures?
In most cases, patients can receive the implants needed to support dentures. Even patients who have had teeth missing for quite a while may be able to undergo the procedure. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone in the jaw to anchor the implants.
Ideal patients are non-smokers whose jaws have stopped growing. Pregnant women should discuss their options with Dr. Levine before proceeding. Some chronic conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, certain immune deficiencies, hemophilia, and connective-tissue diseases should be considered before the procedure. Patients should not habitually grind or clench their teeth, as this can cause too much pressure.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Levine will examine your teeth and take x-rays to determine the structure of your jaw and decide if implant supported dentures are right for you.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Oral surgery will be performed to place the titanium posts. Over the next few months, the bone will fuse to the posts, solidifying the bond. In some cases, the bone will need to be built up via bone grafting, which may extend the timeline of the procedure.
A denture will be created to match the shape and appearance of any existing teeth. Dr. Levine will design your denture to make sure you can enjoy your smile, so you can confidently enjoy life.
During the surgical and fitting process, Dr. Levine will take x-rays to insure proper placement and fit.
Routine maintenance is needed to care for your dentures. Dr. Levine will provide you with all of the information you need to care for your dentures and implants. Ball-retained and bar-retained dentures should be removed every evening and brushed then stored in cleaning solution. However, fixed dentures should just be brushed similarly to natural teeth.
Routine checkups and cleanings will allow Dr. Levine to monitor the fitment and condition of your dentures and implants so you are able to enjoy them for years to come.
