Instant orthodontics – get a picture-perfect smile in just one or two dental visits – Westpark cosmetic dentist, Irvine, CA
Most people put a high value on a straight, even smile. For those who don’t have straight teeth naturally, orthodontic treatment is one way to straighten the teeth. However, this represents a significant commitment in both time and money, and not everyone wants to undertake this type of commitment.
If you want a straighter, more even smile, but don’t want to commit to orthodontic treatment, you do have other options. Dr. Levine can use cosmetic dentistry treatments to quickly create the appearance of a perfect smile for many patients. This can greatly improve your confidence, with far less expense and discomfort and in far less time than with orthodontic treatment.
Dental bonding is the simplest option. This cosmetic dentistry procedure uses composite resin, the same material that’s used for white fillings. The bonding material is carefully applied to the tooth and hardened with a special light. The resin is color-matched to the patient’s teeth, and can be shaped to change the appearance of a tooth. This can be done in just one dental visit and with no need for anesthesia. Many patients choose dental bonding because the procedure can be done so quickly and without discomfort.
Dental bonding tends to work best for relatively minor imperfections, such as small gaps between teeth. Resin can also be used to build up one side of a tooth that is crooked, in order to make it appear straight. If you have several teeth that are crooked, then bonding could be used on all of them to help create the appearance of a perfect smile. However, if you have more than just one or a few teeth that need to be addressed, or if you also have other concerns (such as discolored teeth), veneers may be a better choice.
For those who have several teeth that are out of alignment, veneers may be a good option. Usually, veneers are placed on all of the front teeth, the ones that are visible when you speak or smile. The veneers can be designed to correct for your alignment problems. For example, teeth that are rotated, poorly aligned, or have gaps between them can all be covered with veneers to make them appear well-aligned. Once they’re placed, veneers instantly give you that perfect smile you’ve been dreaming of.
The white porcelain used in traditional veneers is designed to closely mimic natural tooth enamel in both color and translucency. A small amount of enamel is removed from each tooth in order to enable placement of these veneers. There are also some veneers that may not require removal of enamel; these are known as “no-prep” veneers, and they have advantages and disadvantages, which Dr. Levine will discuss with you at your consultation appointment.
Crowns, inlays, and onlays
A crown, sometimes called a “cap,” is a porcelain shell that fits around a tooth. In certain cases, crowns may be used for aesthetic purposes. For example, a tooth that has had a root canal and has become badly discolored may not get the best result from a veneer, and so that tooth may need a crown. Inlays and onlays are essentially partial crowns, in which porcelain is placed on a certain part of a tooth. This may be used to improve its shape, size, or another aspect of its appearance. Crowns are typically not placed on every tooth for instant orthodontics. Rather, one or a few teeth may need crowns, while the rest of the teeth may be treated with another option (often veneers).
Some patients may need orthodontic treatment
There are certain types of alignment or bite issues that may cause more serious issues to develop later on (such as problems with the temporomandibular joint). For these patients, Dr. Levine may recommend treatment by an orthodontist, who is a specialist in this type of treatment. She can refer you to a trusted orthodontist colleague. Your options may include Invisalign, and several different types of braces.
